Honestly, Really? People and Their Heroics

So, naturally, because 2024 is just a continuous parade of unbelievable things, we now have a story about neighbors rescuing a man who fell through ice with paddleboards. Paddleboards! I mean, seriously? Its winter. There’s ice. One should reasonably assume ice equals… well, dont stand on it. Is common sense completely defunct?

Apparently not, but apparently good judgment is optional these days. These heroes, bless their hearts, risked frostbite and potential embarrassment to paddle across a frozen body of water – presumably equipped with precisely the right amount of Instagram lighting for maximum dramatic effect – to pull some hapless individual from his icy predicament. I’m sure he was thrilled.

And dont even get me started on the inevitable follow-up: Local Paddleboard Enthusiasts Hailed as Community Lifesavers! Because thats exactly what we needed, a whole new category of self-proclaimed champions. Look, if you want to participate in potentially dangerous water sports, fine. But could we please try not to require elaborate rescues funded by emergency services and fueled by performative altruism?

It’s just… exhausting. The constant need to be seen as virtuous. The utter lack of personal responsibility. I swear, sometimes I feel like Im living in a reality television show about people desperately vying for the title of Most Likely to Be Rescued.
