A Celebration of…What, Exactly?
Seriously? Two hundred and seventy people gathered in New York City to parade around dressed as a portly plumber? Im not sure what’s more baffling: the dedication, the sheer volume of red hats, or the fact that anyone thought this deserved an event. It’s Mario Day! As if we needed an official day to celebrate jumping on turtles and collecting coins. We’ve been doing that for decades without needing a public display of… enthusiasm.
Lets be honest, it’s performative fandom at its finest. A carefully curated Instagram opportunity. Did anyone actually play any Mario games during this gathering? I suspect the majority were more concerned with angles and filters than with pixelated princesses. It’s not about the love for a beloved character; it’s about showcasing that love, loudly and publicly.
And the costumes! The dedication to replicating every detail – the perfectly sculpted mustache, the impeccably worn overalls – is almost impressive in its absurdity. But then you remember why theyre doing it: likes. Validation. A fleeting moment of internet fame fueled by a character who probably wouldnt approve of such self-indulgence.
I just… I need to go play something genuinely engaging now, something that doesn’t involve witnessing grown adults reenacting video game tropes in broad daylight. Preferably something without a single red hat in sight.
