Another Cat, Another Story, Another Waste of My Time
Seriously? A cat? Rescued from a basement wall in New York? Is this what we’re celebrating now? While the world burns – metaphorically, mostly – and people are struggling with actual problems, were dedicating news cycles to Fluffy McWhiskers’ harrowing escape from…a slightly inconveniently placed brick.
I understand the impulse. Everyone loves a heartwarming animal rescue story. But I am tired of them. Tired of the breathless reporting, the dramatic photos of soot-covered firefighters cradling tiny felines. Are we so devoid of truly compelling narratives that a creature who presumably wandered into a dark, dusty space and got briefly stuck constitutes headline material?
I bet the cat is fine. Probably munching on gourmet salmon pate right now, blissfully unaware of the emotional rollercoaster it inflicted upon local news viewers. And I’ll wager someone paid an exorbitant amount to have that wall dismantled so little Mittens could regain her freedom. Resources! Think of the resources squandered!
Look, Im not a monster. Animals deserve kindness. But is this really worthy of a feature? Shouldn’t we be focusing on… anything else? Literally anything. I suppose it’s easier to feel good about rescuing a cat than tackling systemic poverty or climate change. Its much more convenient. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some actual issues to worry about.
