The Tyranny of “6-7” and Other Linguistic Atrocities

Seriously? “Cooked”? Is that what we’ve come to? Apparently, according to some self-appointed guardians of Michigan collegiate vocabulary, the phrase 6-7 – presumably referring to a rating or score – is now considered “cooked.” As in, beyond redemption. And it needs to meet its end with a “massive” and “full stop.” Good heavens, can we please just let people express themselves without needing to declare their language officially deceased?

This annual survey, bless its cotton socks, continues to highlight the most tiresome trends in communication, and frankly, Im starting to suspect it’s a performance art piece designed solely to induce eye-rolling. “Massive” and full stop? Really? Were we lacking adjectives for finality? Do we need to announce the dramatic expiration of every mildly irritating phrase with such theatrical flair?

It feels like were collectively desperate to declare things over, as if that somehow solves anything. Maybe, just maybe, instead of cataloging and condemning linguistic quirks, we could focus on, I don’t know, actual problems? But no, let’s hyperventilate about the perceived demise of 6-7. Its far more important than, say, critical thinking or genuine human connection.

Im officially declaring my own “full stop” to this ridiculousness. Let people use whatever phrases they want. The world wont end. And frankly, I’d prefer it didn’t.
